Hours and Closures
Rainbow Grove Playschool is open Monday to Thursday, 9am to 1pm, September to mid June. We offer 2 or 4 day programs, with your choice of M/W, T/Th, or Mon-Thurs enrollment.
We follow Portland Public School district's schedule, including closures for weather. As an outdoor only playschool, we do also have the following weather related guidelines:
- When temperatures are expected to be below freezing, we only close if PPS closes or local government bodies discourage road travel. Please pack weather-appropriate clothing and outerwear.
- We close when temperatures are expected at or above 101F during playschool hours.
- We close when Air Quality Index is above or expected to be above 150 at any point during the day on local monitors.
- We monitor situations and may opt to close when AQI is above 100.
- In 2020, the year of the significant wildfires, 355 days were below 100.
Weather related closures are infrequent, and built into the pay structure of the outdoor playschool model. Refunds are not offered for weather or AQI related closures unless any specific incident's closure persists for longer than a full week, in which case we may offer either an extension of the program year, or a refund, at our discretion.
In addition, one week per year is taken as vacation and is included in the pay schedule, usually in May, and one Thursday off in the spring (in 2023, the Thursday will be May 11th; there is no week off in May 2022). Infrequently, other days may be taken for trainings or brief trips, and if a substitute is unavailable, refunds or discounts may be offered for those days. Because we believe everyone deserves paid sick days, refunds will not be offered for provider illness unless they exceed 4 days per school year.
